Hidden corrosion in places such as the walls of storage tanks, columns, drums and pipelines can cause major problems in petro chemical plants.

Our Solution
The Applus RTD Mapscan system makes it possible to measure on-stream hidden corrosion and map out residual wall thickness in a targeted fashion with the help of 2D color plots.

The encoder in combination with the ultrasonic equipment gives the position of every measured wall thickness in a scan area of 250 x 500 mm. The encoder registers 2 axes of motion, X and Y. The wall thickness measured in the process are registered in the form of a 2D color plot. By marking and registering the scanned locations in a report, it becomes possible to reproduce the measurements at the same locations. The color plot obtained from the reproduced measurements can then be compared with each other making it possible to accurately determine the growth of corrosion and/or erosion areas and wall thickness reduction over time.

Performance details include:

  • Color plots of 250 x 500 mm (C-scan)
  • Average scan speed of 3 square feet per day (8 C-Scans)
  • Resolution greater than 8mm
  • Can be used on carbon steel and stainless steel
  • Wall thickness from 2mm, diameter from 6  inches
  • Operating temperatures from 31° F to 122° F
